Read below to hear about the lemonade stand Yolanda Jauregui, a paralegal with Lewis since 2023, and her nine-year-old daughter Emily set up in honor of Carmen Ortega’s volunteer work.
Yolanda
I was talking to Carmen about what we did over the weekend, and I told her about my little girl’s lemonade stand. Carmen shared with me her story about having an orphanage and a church she donates to, so I ask her if my daughter, Emily, could contribute to her charity. Emily has been looking for a place to donate and I thought this was perfect. I told my daughter, and she was super excited that I found an orphanage. She is planning to buy back-to-school supplies and Christmas gifts for the kids at the orphanage. Emily wants to continue to raise money and her goal is to donate school supplies and Christmas gifts to the orphanage.
Backstory to Emily’s new lemonade recipe. We went to the farmers market at Terra Vista and bough a lemonade. Emily watched very closely how the man made the lemonade. So, the following week she started smashing strawberries and blueberries and squeezed a few lemons. Then she went to her friend’s house for a bit, and the girls came back saying they’re having a lemonade stand … that they had everything they needed and only needed help making a sign. The kids planned this lemonade stand all by themselves and they had a great time selling lemonade.
Is this your first lemonade stand?
Emily: This is my 3rd lemonade stand.
What’s the hardest part of running your stand?
Emily: The hardest thing is preparing the lemonade. I had to smash strawberries, blueberries and squeeze the lemons and make sure to prepare enough so we don’t run out.
What’s your favorite part of the lemonade stand?
Emily: Making other people smile.
What lessons did you learn?
Emily: Not to make a big mess. To clean up after I’m doing something, so I don’t have a lot to do at the end. Also, it is a lot of fun if I invite my friends, we split the work and end up having tons of fun.
I always invite my friends to join me at my lemonade stand. Usually, us girls stay at the stand serving and selling the lemonade to the customers who stop by. While the boys go knocking at our neighbors’ houses to let them know we are selling lemonade. If neighbors place an order, the boys will go out to deliver the lemonade. Then afterward we all stay at the lemonade stand selling lemonade and chips.
Lemonade flavors?
Emily: Strawberry-blueberry lemonade and plain lemonade.
What do you plan on doing with the money you already made?
Emily: We are planning to buy school supplies to donate. The lemonade stand lasted about 4hrs and raised $72.
What do you plan to do with the money you will earn?
Emily: I’ve been saving since last year to donate to a charity. I want to buy school supplies and Christmas gifts to donate to kids, maybe to an orphanage.
