How was Jackson's spinal issue initially identified, and what steps were taken to address it?

Shari: Jackson’s spinal issue was first observed when he began sitting up as an infant. His spine showed a noticeable curve, prompting a visit to the pediatrician. This marked the beginning of his journey toward specialized medical care.

Through his mother’s connection to the Shriners fraternal organization, Jackson was referred to Shriners Children’s Hospital. There, a misshapen vertebra was discovered—half-formed and causing a significant curve in his spine. Diagnosed with scoliosis at just one year old, Jackson embarked on a medical journey that included two back surgeries. Now at 15 years old, he leads an active and vibrant lifestyle.

What was the experience like for Jackson wearing a turtle shell, and how did it affect his activities?

Shari: Before he was ready for surgery, Jackson needed to wear a turtle shell brace to manage his spinal curve. Rather than hindering him, this brace became a part of his playful life, even assisting in his breakdancing! At five years old, surgeons at Shriners Hospital removed the malformed vertebra and stabilized his spine with rods. Following a second surgery at age 13, Jackson’s spine has now stabilized with just a slight curve. His passion for life, dance, and music remained undiminished throughout his medical challenges. He continued to engage in his passions, playing piano and the baritone horn in his junior high school honors orchestra, and participating in theater in high school showcasing his indomitable spirit.

What inspired Jackson to start cross-country running, and how has it influenced his family?

Shari: Jackson’s interest in cross-country running was somewhat unexpected, possibly inspired by his cousin Tegan, a track and cross-country enthusiast. This new venture became a personal achievement for Jackson and influenced his family, inspiring them to participate in running events together. They ran a 5k on Thanksgiving Day with another one planned for St. Patrick’s Day and some sort of tortuous mountain race in June.

Besides running what are some of Jackson’s other passions?
